I'm from the Midwest and there we have shiny black crickets which are bulky and relatively slow moving.
These are easily dispatched when they enter one's dwelling.
In Virginia, there are large brown crickets I have dubbed Jumpers because they have very long legs and about a fourteen foot vertical jump.
They are swift and try to jump in my face and are the spawn of Satan. One just crawled up on my bed! It eluded me during a wild chase through the room, evaded my attempts to kill it and went under my dresser. I crawled around with a flashlight trying to coerce it out from it's hiding place.
I can't find it. I think it has a cloaking device, because it kind of looks like this guy.
I now wish I had some mosquito netting to wrap myself up in so I can sleep. That and a some sort of flamethrower.
The jumpy bug is now in cricket heaven.
I have my Halloween costume sorted.
"Surface Detail" is waiting for me at the library.
I can now sleep easy.
